Trimming/Grooming

ENGLISH SETTERS – TRIMMING AND GROOMING INFORMATION

Scroll further down for the MINIATURE SCHNAUZER chart

I have shown English Setters for over 40 years, having won runner up (RCC) to the top English Male at the Crufts Centenary.   I have occasionally Judged and produced my last ever litter in 2019. I  trim English Setters to show standard in my own home, by appointment only

I will if you wish clipper off the body which is what we call an all american trim, however  I will only do this if the dog or bitch is castrated or spayed and the coat grows profusely and is just horrendous to keep smooth and sleek without knots.

If it is a trim only including nails trimmed,  which most people choose,  then I expect a clean dog (otherwise it ruins the scissors) Alternatively you can have the full works – Wash, Trim, Blow Dry, Nails cut. I would prefer to meet your dog beforehand to assess the grooming etc. if possible.  You need to start at 5 months with a Puppy Trim to get them use to being handled,  electric clippers and being on a grooming table.

IF YOU FIND A LOCAL GROOMER TO TRIM YOUR ENGLISH SETTER, PLEASE ENSURE THEY ARE  NOT USING AN AMERICAN TRIMMING CHART.(unless they are castrated or spayed and even then they really dont know what they are doing )   The American method is totally frowned upon in the UK and will clipper off the back of your dog and is totally unacceptable.. They leave the ears long instead of short. the leg feathering probably shortened and cut, and will not resemble an English Setter as we know them in the UK  and you will end up in tears.Plus of course the coat has probably been ruined and when it finally grows back will not be the silky texture and be curly. If you are unsure about them Print off a copy of the Grooming Chart below and show it to them if you dare risk it !!!!!.

I run a Facebook Grooming page for English Setters only – English Setters UK the Grooming Room. There is a link on that site to the list of Groomers who are recommended and majority of those are actually Exhibitors of the Breed.

English Setters should be groomed daily, ensuring all their feathering is knot free, back is brushed through to the base not just the top of the coat,   their ears checked inside, and their feet checked for sores. Its like a daily mini medical.

The Ears and Feet should be trimmed with all English Setters regardless of whether they are being shown or not.  This is done for health reasons.    The Ears need the air and not clogged up with hair all around.  The feet need keeping short and trimmed between the toes to stop build up of lumps of mud etc. which can create sores and then start the chewing of the feet. (Always leave some of the fringing on the front of the ear to soften the look)  Dont forget to ensure their claws are kept reasonably short and remember to also check the one Dew Claw on the inside of each leg as if they grow long they get caught on things and can split, break. (Some Breeders may have had these removed by their vet at 3 days old)

I live close to Junction 28 of the M1 on the Notts/Derbys Border I am about half a mile from the Designer Outlet where you can enjoy shopping or have a coffee at Starbucks etc you can just drop off and collect just after One Hour.. .  Obviously if its a full Wash, Blow Dry, Condition and Trim then it will take about 2 hours.

For those who want to have a go themselves then this is the Chart for Pet Owners courtesy of the ESA.

Start at about 5 months old so your puppy gets used to being trimmed, ears being picked up, feet being trimmed etc. .   I suggest initially for puppies a rubber car mat on a firm table that doesnt rock. later on you can find something else suitable for an Adult..   Every time put him on the same table and it becomes a Grooming routine and he knows he has to behave and why he is on the table !!!.    When teething puppies often get one ear infected so this is the time to check and treat whilst they are behaving.

YOU WILL NEED A PAIR OF STRAIGHT SCISSORS AND A PAIR OF THINNING SCISSORS

(Doesnt matter if the thinners are double sided or one straight edge –  personal preference) – these are used to trim the Fur off the ears, Throat, Bum Curls, cutting off excess hair when pulled through feet.

(Scissors short length )  – these are used to tidy up round the outside edge of the ear,  End of the Tail, Tail Feathering,  Hair off the back of the Hocks, Trimming round edge of feet and any excess hair under the pads.

ALWAYS ASK IF A GROOMER KNOWS HOW TO TRIM AND ENGLISH SETTER CORRECTLY

most do NOT – or they use an American Trimming Chart (this is not how a UK English is trimmed)

An English should have a long coat falling from the top down the sides

NEVER EVER EVER LET ANY GROOMER CLIPPER THE BACK OF THE DOGS COAT

It will ruin it and grow back all curly and short. (Unless castrated or spayed then thats ok )

TELL THEM NEVER EVER EVER TO USE A STRIPPING KNIFE

It will Cut the coat and ruin it

TELL THEN NEVER EVER EVER THIN OUT THE TOP  COAT

It ruins it

Note: Although this is the finished look we do use additional tools such as clippers if we are doing a show trim. Obviously there is a lot more finishing to get that perfection for the ring.

MINIATURE SCHNAUZERS – GROOMING INFORMATION

There are two methods of Grooming Minis – Hand Stripped (mainly done for the show ring)  and clippered which is what I use for my mines and suggest for those grooming your own.  Photos are courtesy of the Miniature Schnauzer club Handbook.

Groomers are usually happy to to offer you the choice, however, hand stripping is far more expensive and takes a lot longer – I personally would opt for the clippering.

I would suggest you start as you mean to go on as Minis can be very very stubborn when it comes to grooming.  Buy yourself a Large Rubber Car Mat and place this on a firm table that doesnt rock.   Every time you groom put him on this table and he will realise why he is there, and that he has to behave and hopefully it will become a routine.

HERE ARE THE CHARTS –  CLICK TO ENLARGE

CLIPPING WHICH I RECOMMEND

YOU WILL NEED A PAIR OF CLIPPERS SUCH AS OSTER, BLADE NO 10 AND BLADE NO 7

OR THE CLIPPERS WITH THE PLASTIC HEAD SUCH AS THE CHEAPER WAHL – BUT REMEMBER THEIR COATS ARE COARSE AND OFTEN CHEAP CLIPPERS WILL NOT RUN THROUGH THE COAT

PAIR OF STRAIGHT EDGED SCISSORS, THINNING SCISSORS AND YOU CAN IF YOU FEEL RICH BUY A PAIR OF CURVED SCISSORS TO DO THE EYEBROWS.

A COAT KING STRIPPING KNIFE WILL TAKE OUT THE PUPPY FLUFF INITIALLY
